Ticos at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship

It is May 2024 and the ISA Junior World Surf Championship is being celebrated in El Salvador, Central America!
The contest is held on two beaches, La Bocana and El Sunzal Beach, both known as surfing spots. The Junior WSC is divided into four categories, girls U16 and U18 and sub U16 and U18 for men.
Costa Rica has a representation in this tournament with two participants from Santa Teresa itself. Let’s take a look into the girls and boys who are representing our country.

Junior Girls

Erika Berra: Despite at her young age, Erika has a bunch of international competencies in her back. She is from Puerto Viejo, a very know surfing destination on the Caribbean coast. She has been the national champion in 2019 and 2023 in her respective junior categories.

Rachel Aguero: She is from Playa Hermosa and has been surfing since was 9. One of the most experienced in the team, she has been in international competitions since 2019. At the time of the writing, she was already qualified for the second round.

Tamaya Murphrey: Her second year at the junior ISA. Tamara is from Nosara, where she has been surfing since turned 11. She has plenty of experience in competitions, mostly in the Surf National Circuit.

Mikela Castro: The younger of the team, with only ten years. From Cieneguita Limon, she is already a sensation in Costa Rica’s surf scene thanks to her talent and her attitude, always smiling. This is her second ISA event if we counted them correctly.

Junior Boys

Fabian Rosales: Prodigal son from Santa Teresa, Fabian has been surfing since he was in school. Fabian is very well known locally but nationally and internationally he has been struggling a little. This JWSC is one of his first international competitions and as the writing of this article, Fabian classified to round of 16. Fabian future wishes include becoming an ISA champion.

Ethan Hollander: Ethan was born and still resides in Dominical. National U16 Champion, Ethan also won the Junior Category in the National Scholastic Surfing Association, known as NSSA, in California in 2022.
Ethan competes regularly in local and international events standing on the podium regularly.

Denzell Reyes: Denzell is from Santa Teresa too. One of the most prominent surf talents, he has been surfing since he turned 4. At the time we were writing this, we were informed that Denxell advanced to the next round. Congratulations.

Romeo Stone: Nosara is the town that saw Romeo grow. He is still established there, training every day. He is a very trustworthy surfer who has qualified for the Surf National team 3 years in a row. He is very involved in Nosara’s development issues, as he wants to build up the popularity of Nosara as a surf destination.

Tomas Pathenay: We have little information about Tomas but the fact that he was the most successful Costa Rican surfer in the last junior ISA surf tournament in Brazil. Tomas has turned 15 last year, so we believe he will gain a name very soon because of his talent.

Nicolas Boos: The current U14 national champion. Nicolas has plenty of experience participating in international competitions. He just won the ALAS competition last year in Puerto Rico, also in the category U14.

This ISA World Junior Surfing Championship is going to be one of the best ones in recent years. Mostly of the quality of the participants. Also, El Salvador is promoting the surfing heavily becoming a common destination for surfing tournaments.
